What are math word problems for?

Solving math word problems develops logical thinking and the ability to model real situations. Unlike pure calculation exercises, word problems require reading, interpreting, planning and verifying — fundamental skills for everyday life.

Recommended routine: 15–20 minutes daily. Read the problem completely before starting. Underline the data and the question. Choose the operation, solve and verify that the answer makes sense (with units and in the context of the problem).

📌 Strategies by problem type

Division and sharing

Identify who shares, what is shared and among how many. If the result is not exact, the "remainder" is part of the answer. Verify by multiplying.

Percentages

Always calculate the percentage on the original value. The multiplicative factor is faster than calculating the percentage and adding/subtracting separately.

Geometry

Draw the figure before calculating. Label the measurements. Check that units are consistent (don't mix cm with m in the same operation).

Speed and distance

The V-D-T triangle helps remember the formulas: cover what you want to find and the triangle shows whether to multiply or divide the other two.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Are these worksheets free?
Yes, 100% free. No sign-up or card needed. Generate problems, practice online with step-by-step, or print directly.
How to save as PDF?
Click "Print / PDF" and select "Save as PDF". Problems and solutions print on separate pages automatically.
How to solve a math word problem?
Read the full problem, underline known data and the question, choose the operation, solve step by step, and verify the answer has units and makes sense.
What grade level are these for?
Beginner: grades 1–3. Intermediate: grades 4–6. Advanced: middle school grades 7–8.
Can I share a worksheet with my students?
Yes. Click "Share" to copy a link with all settings.
How to calculate a percentage?
Multiply the value by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 = 150 × 20 / 100 = 30.
What is direct proportionality?
When two quantities grow or decrease together in the same proportion. If double the time means double the distance, they are directly proportional.
How to solve speed problems?
Use the formula V = D/T. If you have speed and time, distance is V × T. If you have distance and speed, time is D/V.
