Understanding place value is the foundation of all arithmetic. A student who understands that in 4,732 the 7 is worth 700 can operate with large numbers, handle carrying in addition and subtraction, and understand decimals much more easily.
Recommended routine: 10 minutes daily, alternating exercise types. Start with decomposing, then composing, then comparing.
Start with 2-digit numbers. Use concrete materials (dice, coins, bills) to make each position tangible before moving to paper.
Ask students to read the resulting number aloud. Oral reading fixes the concept better than writing alone.
Point to the position before answering. The digit and its place value are different things: the 3 in 3,500 is worth 3,000.
Align numbers on the right and compare digit by digit from left to right. The first digit that differs decides which number is greater.
