Every World Cup features the famous “group of death”: a group full of strong teams where nobody has an easy path to qualification. With 48 teams and 12 groups, World Cup 2026 offers more chances than ever for explosive combinations.
What exactly is a “group of death”?
There is no strict mathematical definition, but we usually call it a group of death when several top teams or in-form national sides end up together. It can be based on world titles, FIFA ranking or simply on football perception.
The interesting thing is that the concept mixes objective data (trophies, ranking) with football emotions: stories, rivalries and momentum.
Why the 2026 format may create more groups of death
With 12 groups of 4 teams, the range of possible combinations becomes huge. As more high-level teams qualify, it is likely that we will see several very tough groups instead of only one.
The draw pots try to keep things balanced, but there is always room for surprises: strong teams coming from supposedly weaker pots or world champions not at their best.
